A New Vision of Nature

As springtime arrives, and the earth begins to replenish itself after a long winter, we here at OPTI® eSTORIES thought it'd be a good time to remind ourselves, and our readers, of the astonishing beauty our planet offers up every day. We've been given an amazing gift — both from our eyes and from the world around us — and we know we can take it for granted sometimes.

As a little reminder of just how amazing our planet it is — and how important it is that we keep it (and our eyes) healthy and beautiful — we've created a gallery of 14 stunning images that look at nature from a different perspective, along with tips on how to keep our eyes and our planet going strong.

Shorten your shower time

The average shower uses 2-5 gallons of water per minute, so every second counts! Try to get your shower time to under 5 minutes.

Quit smoking

Most people know smoking is bad for your lungs, but it can also increase the risk of eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Shop for local produce

Think how much fuel it takes to transport fruits and vegetables to your local grocery store. Save some energy and help support your local farmers' market!

Give your eyes a break

Every 10-20 minutes, take a break from what you're focusing on and close your eyes for a few seconds. It'll help you refocus and help prevent dryness and discomfort.

Avoid harsh cleaning products

Biodegradable and environmentally friendly cleaning products help keep your home and the water clean.

Fix any leaky plumbing

Regularly check toilets and faucets for leaks. A leaking toilet can waste more than 30 gallons of water per day!

Protect your eyes from the sun

Always wear sunglasses outdoors, and help prevent eye problems down the line. Just make sure the lenses block at least 98% of UV radiation.

Make the switch to fluorescent lightbulbs

If everyone in the U.S. changed just one bulb in their home, it'd reduce as much pollution as taking 1,000,000 cars off the road!

Visit your eye doctor yearly

Your eyes and vision can change without you even realizing. A yearly eye exam helps ensure you stay on top of these changes.

Reduce the mail you receive

Discontinue paper statements from your bank. Start paying bills online. Decrease your junk mail, and you can increase the number of trees still standing!

Turn off the faucet when you're not using it

Your mom was right about leaving the water running: It can waste up to 4 gallons per minute!

Plant a tree

Or, better yet, plant a whole forest of them! Trees reduce carbon dioxide, create oxygen and can help shade and cool your home.

Recycle your old technology

Cell phone and laptop batteries often contain lead and mercury, which can leak into the soil and contaminate water. Check local electronics stores.
