Airline Carry-On Restrictions Within the Continental U.S.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) generally doesn't allow you to carry-on liquids in containers larger than 3 ounces. However, saline solution, rewetting drops, and multi-purpose solution for soft contact lenses are considered "over-the-counter medications" that CAN be carried on the plane — if they meet the following TSA inspection criteria:

"All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including lubricating jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes are permitted. You are not limited in the amount or volume of these items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. BUT if the medically necessary items exceed three ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, you MUST declare to one of the security officers at the checkpoint for further inspection."

Although "saline solution for medical purposes" DOES include most products used with soft contact lenses, not all TSA personnel may know this. That's why 4 oz. bottles of OPTI-FREE® RepleniSH® and OPTI-FREE® EXPRESS® solutions now have "TSA Compliant" clearly marked on the label.

For further information and updates on TSA regulations, visit the TSA website.

Remember, these rules only apply to airports in the United States and the other countries that have adopted the TSA guidelines.
